Aplin Martin provided on-site engineering services for a 190-unit multi-family site in the southeast of Calgary. This included detailed grading design and shallow and deep utility layouts. This specific site had a high density of row townhomes, which required a detail examination of all aspects of site grading and servicing.
The site included buildings that were close together with garages on both ends. This made grade changes across the site difficult. Also, none of the buildings had driveways, so they were close to the road which made creating alignments for the shallow and deep utilities a challenge. Surface storage was utilized to achieve the unit area release rate for the site. Since the roads were low in the center, in order to direct stormwater away from the buildings, a separate weeping tile system from the storm main was proposed. This allowed free flow away from the building foundations and basements, while allowing the main storm system to be controlled to City of Calgary standards.
