Aplin Martin was retained by the City of Abbotsford to provide management, coordination, design, tendering and construction services for the replacement of existing asbestos concrete watermains. Project involved design and construction of 3.3 km of various sized watermain replacement on 12 streets (2012), 2.1 km of 250mm watermain on 2 streets (2013), and 3.7km of various sized watermain replacement on 12 streets (2015). Project included watermain tie-ins, permitting, and service connection transfers as well as detailed flushing plans conducive to the system and neighbourhood capabilities. Obstacles to overcome in the scope of work were utilities conflicts, public inconvenience, property impacts, poor soil conditions which necessitated a use of light weight backfill, corrosive soil, construction in a suburban environment and on a narrow rural road with deep drainage ditches on either side of the road, coordination with Fortis BC for adjacent 323mm IP gas main replacement, and coordination of external agency permits including the Ministry of Transportation service interruptions.
Aplin Martin also designed and coordinated acquiring of permits for the crossing of the Canadian Pacific Railway line – Mission to US Border Line, via 60 meter casing pipe install by trenchless technologies. The project was successfully completed under budget allowing the addition of 2 streets designed by others to the project construction.
