The City of Surrey retained Aplin Martin to provide detailed engineering design and construction administration for the construction of 1.9-kilometres of arterial widening on 72 Avenue and 196 Street. 72 Avenue serves as a major thoroughfare connecting the East Clayton neighbourhood to the Township of Langley to the east. The primary component of the project is expanding the existing two-lane rural standard road to meet the City’s new 20m wide pavement standard for urban arterial roads. Also included in the project is widening a segment of 196 Street to match the new expanded intersection, pre-servicing adjacent developments, and abandoning a segment of existing watermain.
The primary concern from local residents in the project area was the loss of parking on the existing gravel shoulders. Aplin Martin assisted the City of Surrey in coordinating and informing residents of the upcoming changes in the area by producing presentation style drawings for the City to issue and use in public consultations.
