Homes for Heroes Radisson
Southeast of Calgary, AB
Aplin Martin is currently providing project management and civil engineering services for a 15-unit site in the southeast of Calgary which will be used as housing for homeless veterans. This work includes managing the DP, DSSP, and BP Submission, as well as designing detailed grading plans, deep utility plans, and stormwater calculations. Rough construction costs were also provided for preliminary budget purposes.
The project will provide homes, a community of peers, a support structure designed to meet individual needs, and a sense of place and belonging for war veterans. The goal is to provide the framework needed to ensure a successful transition into civilian life. The project includes working with local social agencies to provide support, including employment agencies, once veterans are ready for employment. The units are designed to be adaptable so they can easily be moved to a new location at the end of the lease. Because of this, minimal services were used. The site also includes a community garden to provide a food source for residents, and a central amenity building for the residents to gather. This site provided challenges with stormwater design due to the small site size and strict allowable release rates. This obstacle was overcome through creating low points within the site, adding rain gardens, using ICD’s and a drywell.
